(AP) — An Upper Peninsula sheriff in Michigan’s smallest county is making a public plea for more mental health services after a young driver smashed a car into trees to try to end a life.
A Facebook post, with a photo of the crumpled car, has been shared more than 6,000 times this week. That s more than three times the population of Keweenaw County. The young driver survived the crash and was sent home with a “safety plan.”
Sheriff Curt Pennala says, “This does not sit well with us!” The sheriff says he s not knocking Copper Country Mental Health Services. Pennala says the public must demand a meaningful discussion about Michigan s “broken mental health system.” ....

EAGLE RIVER, Mich. (AP) An Upper Peninsula sheriff in Michigan’s smallest county is making a public plea for more mental health treatment after a young driver smashed a car into trees to try to end a life.
A Facebook post, with a photo of the crumpled car, has been shared more than 6,000 times this week, more than three times the population of Keweenaw County.
“In the past month we have transported several people who were looking for help to be evaluated by our local mental health,” Sheriff Curt Pennala’s office said. “Do you want to take a guess on how many received treatments? None. When are we going to have a meaningful discussion on the broken mental health system in Michigan?” ....

County OKs purchase for potential jail site | News, Sports, Jobs


HOUGHTON Houghton County has a new site for a potential jail.
Tuesday, the board approved purchasing the First Apostolic Lutheran Church property on Sharon Avenue for $1.1 million. The board discussed the purchase in closed session prior to the vote.
The terms of when Houghton County would be able to move onto the site still need to be finalized in the purchase agreement, Vice Chairman Tom Tikkanen said.
Board members and the public toured the church site last month prior to a board work session. The congregation plans to build a bigger church on Gundlach Road.
The 14,000-square-foot building would be planned to house the sheriff’s office, work camp, district court, and potentially offices such as the county clerk. A new county jail would be built on land behind the church, partially overlapping with the current parking lot. ....

HOUGHTON The Rice Memorial Clinic Foundation is pleased to announce that Community Mental Health Careers Scholarship Awards are available again this year. The Foundation established the program in 1992 to promote careers in professions related to Community Mental Health.
A $600 scholarship is available to a graduating senior from each of the 13 high schools in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon Counties, the area served by Copper Country Mental Health Services Board. The $600 scholarship may be available to the recipient for each year of their undergraduate education, up to a maximum of $2,400, as long as they remain in an accepted program of study. ....
