The Inadequacy of the Term “Asian American”
Sarath Suong has often felt like the term “Asian American” doesn’t really serve him.
A Cambodian refugee who immigrated to the US as a child, Suong prefers to identify as Southeast Asian instead.
“I was told that I am Asian American when we came here,” he says. “But I faced a lot of colorism, a lot of classism, and not a lot of understanding about who Southeast Asians are and how we fit into the Asian American context.”
Suong’s family was among tens of thousands of refugees who fled during the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, eventually settling in the Boston area. When he arrived in the US, he struggled to find his footing in a country where everyone from teachers to neighbors made him feel unwelcome. ....

L.A. County moves to include Asians in anti-hate initiative

More Coverage
L.A. County is home to some of the largest populations in the United States of Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Indonesian, Korean, Sri Lankan, Taiwanese and Thai Americans, according to the motion.
D’Artagnan Scorza, the county’s executive director of racial equity, said at Tuesday’s board meeting that since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an exponential growth in violence and hate against Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.
In 2020, Los Angeles police saw a 114% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes, Scorza said.

He added in lengthy public comments Thursday that no harm was meant, that he has many Asian American friends and that the word Wuhan is “inseparable” from the back story of the pandemic referring to a city, not an ethnicity.
Wrong response.
Husted knows that using weaponized expressions like “China virus,” “Wuhan virus” and “Kung flu” is wrong. That it is dangerous. That it is something for which he should apologize. ....
