Thailand fully prepared to handle people fleeing from Myanmar


BANGKOK, March 13 (Bernama): Anticipating a possible mass exodus from Myanmar following the escalation of violence as authorities crack down on anti-coup protests, Thailand has been getting ready to handle those fleeing the neighbouring country.
Thailand’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanee Sangrat said security agencies and provincial authorities along Thailand-Myanmar border were ready to handle possible border crossings.
They have taken steps to prepare facilities. So far, there has been no persons crossing the borders seeking asylum in Thailand due to the situation in Myanmar,” he said at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ weekly press conference, here, today.
Local media reported that authorities in Thailand’s northernmost province of Chiang Rai had intercepted a group of eight Myanmar nationals - four men including two monks, and four women - who crossed from Myanmar’s border town of Tachileik into Thailand. The group was pushed back across ....

Oil and gas companies active in Myanmar have been urged to cut off the supply of revenues to the military junta that staged a coup in the Southeast Asian producer nation early last month.
Last weekend saw the bloodiest pro-democracy protests in Myanmar since 1 February, when the military seized power and subsequently detained more than 1300, including civilian lawmakers, activists and journalists.
Such deadly violence against peaceful demonstrators cannot be justified, said Steffen Seibert, a spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

A phalanx of police in riot gear violently dispersed a group of Burmese and Thai pro-democracy demonstrators gathered outside the Myanmar embassy in central Bangkok on Feb. 1 in protest at a military coup in Myanmar.
