Spanish mountain climber Sergi Mingote dies on K2

Experienced Spanish mountaineer Sergi Mingote died Saturday while attempting to summit K2, the world’s second-highest peak. He was 49.
Mingote fell down a crevasse while making his way back to camp, Reuters reported.
“Rest in peace Sergi. Today you start a new climb,” read a post on his Instagram page.
Mingote was attempting to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter-high mountains in 1,000 days. K2, standing 28,250 feet as part of the Karakoram range along the Pakistan-China border, was to be his eighth.

Pakistan felicitated on Sunday the team of Nepalese mountaineers for making history by reaching the summit of Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second highest mountain, in winter.
Calling the expedition as “one of the most coveted achievements in mountaineering,” the Foreign Office Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri wished the climbers a safe return from the peak.
“Pakistan: The ultimate destination of mountaineering,” the spokesperson remarked on Twitter. ....

KATHMANDU, Jan. 16 (Xinhua): A mountaineering team from Nepal made history on Saturday by scaling Mt K2, the second tallest mountain in the world, located on the Pakistan-China border, in the winter.
A team of 10 climbers managed by Kathmandu-based Seven Summit Treks Pvt Ltd stood atop of the 8,611-meter peak at 5 pm local time. Mt K2 also called Chhogori was the only peak above 8,000 meters that had not been climbed in the winter.
Yes, our team has created a history by being atop the second tallest peak nobody had managed to do earlier, Thaneshwor Guragain, a manager at the Seven Summit Treks, told Xinhua. Ten climbers managed by our company climbed the peak at 4:58 in the afternoon. ....

GILGIT: Ten Nepalese climbers on Saturday set a record by scaling Pakistan’s K2 (8,611m), the world’s second highest mountain and the only one among the 8,000m peaks that had never been climbed before in winter.
The same day, however, a Spanish climber lost his life after falling into a crevasse at camp 1.
Over 60 international climbers from 18 countries had arrived at the K2 base camp and started their adventure in early January to try and scale what is also known as the Savage Mountain or the King of North, as winds there can blow at more than 200km an hour and temperatures can drop to minus 60 degrees Celsius in winter. ....
