Just A Beluga Whale Playing Fetch Out In The Middle Of The Ocean | 92 5 Rocks

By Chuck Nowlin
Feb 8, 2021
The Chiefs could have used a receiver like this in the Super Bowl. A beluga whale playing catch with a fisherman off the coast of Norway went viral last year, but there s more to the story.
The fisherman throws a rugby ball out into the water and the whale brings it back to him in an oceanic game of fetch, but word is, this whale is Russian. The whale in the video is named Hvaldimir, a beluga whale that escaped from a Russian military facility. A spy? He turned up in the waters off the fishing village of Tufjord, on an island at the northern tip of Norway last year. He had a harness attached to his body labelled with the words, ‘Equipment of St Petersburg’, and harassed fishermen’s boats by approaching them and tugging on straps and ropes hanging off the sides. They managed to free him from the harness and now he s got game. ....

In 'Fathoms,' an investigation into whales reveals much about the world

In ‘Fathoms,’ an investigation into whales reveals much about the world
By Rebecca Giggs. Simon and Schuster, 2020. 340 pages. $27.
’Fathoms: The World in the Whale, ’ by Rebecca Giggs
Giggs begins, “A few years ago, I helped push a beached humpback whale out into the sea only to witness it return and expire under its own weight on the shoreline.” This event, near her home in Australia, sent the author on a deep dive to learn all she could about whales, their place in both history and today’s troubled ocean, and what we humans might learn from them about the complexity and fragility of life. ....

Anxiety-Inducing Satellite Data Shows Blue Whales Trying to Dodge Boats in Patagonia

CLARE WATSON
5 FEBRUARY 2021
Up to 1,000 shipping vessels storm through blue whale feeding grounds in northern Patagonia every day, according to a new study from researchers who say the findings should support an urgent conversation about the regulation of marine traffic in Chile.

The research, which used satellite tracking data to identify where blue whales – the largest mammal on Earth – come up against heavy shipping traffic, could also in time help to create strategies and safe havens to protect these ocean giants.
This is a great example of where science can directly help inform conservation actions, Vanessa Pirotta, a wildlife scientist at Macquarie University Australia, who was not involved in the study, told ScienceAlert. ....
