Hardin County Fair sees record crowd-first event since pandemic

HARDIN COUNTY, Ky. The Hardin County Fair is coming to a close Saturday night after six days of competitions, shows, rides and fair food. It’s been a success so far, bringing in more people than in 2019.
“Most county fairs that have already gone have seen a 30 percent increase and we’re a little bit ahead of that now,” Hardin County Fair Board President Marty Fulkerson.
What would be the 58th year of the fair is just the 57th after organizers made the decision to cancel last year’s fair due to the pandemic. ....

Pig races draw large crowds at county fair

At the Hardin County FairÂgrounds in Glendale on WedÂnesÂday evening, a large crowd gathered on a set of bleachers to witness what was billed as âThe Fastest Pigs in the South.â Laid out before the audience was a small fenced-in race track and a trailer that contained the contenders in an event known simply as a Pig Race.
Throughout the course of the race event, groups of pigs lined up at the start of the track, racing for a bowl of food that met them at the end. Before each race, announcer Luddie Ackerman called on children in the audience to place their bets on which pig would win. Those who bet on the winning pig were given a free cup of food to feed animals in the All American Petting Zoo, which was adjacent to the race track. ....

Local leader made impact on community

After losing her first husband to a work-related accident in 1975, June Thornberry Raine was a working widow with children.
âShe was committed to making sure that her kids had the opportunity in life to succeed,â said Marty Fulkerson, ElizabethÂtown city councilman and a friend of Thornberry Raine.
By that point, Thornberry Raine already had begun a long career in banking, and would become a formidable part of the Hardin County community.
Thornberry Raine died Sunday at Atria in Elizabethtown with her family there. She was 94.
According to her obituary, she was born on July 10, 1926, and married her first husband, Jimmy Thornberry, in 1949. ....
