NM Hoopsters Sweep Tigerhawks
COLFAX – A pair of North Mahaska basketball players ripped the cords for their respective teams as North Mahaska swept South Iowa Cedar League foe Colfax-Mingo Friday night. The girls won 56-30 while the boys picked up a 77-51 win.
Junior Layla Hargis poured in 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the 13th-ranked NM girls. Most of Hargis’s points came off second chance opportunities. Fellow junior Addie Schilling finished with 13 points and seven boards. Kaitlyn VanDonselaar and Maddie McKay each scored six points.
North Mahaska forced 21 Tigerhawk turnovers. Unofficially, VanDonselaar was credited with five steals and Schilling had four.
Coming off a sweep of Tri-County Thursday night, Twin Cedars repeated that effort Friday against Orient-Macksburg on the road. The Sabers girls won 52-45 in overtime and the boys came out on top 46-32.
In the first half of the double header, Twin Cedars’ Brooke Roby went off for 29 points and 10 rebounds. Cheyanne Bruns added another 13, including three shots from beyond the arc. This was the Sabers’ fifth game in seven days, and they went 5-0 in them to improve to 9-6. Head Coach Trent Verwers praised his girls for keeping their composure after a subpar defensive performance that saw their wire to wire lead vanish in the closing moments of regulation.
