Ellie Slama Wins Individual Title At Silverado Showdown

NAPA, Calif. – Ellie Slama won an individual title for the third time in her Oregon State career, this time at the Silverado Showdown on Wednesday.

Slama, a senior from Salem, Ore., finished with an 8-under 67-68-73 208 and outlasted a competitive field that included eight Pac-12 teams to win the individual crown by one stroke over Allisen Corpuz of USC (7-under 70-71-68 209).

As a team, Oregon State finished in a season-best third place in the 13-team field with a 21-over 291-291-303 885 at the par-72, 6,192-yard Silverado Country Club.

No. 11 USC won the team title with a 2-under 862 and No. 37 UCLA finished second with a 3-over 867. ....

That’s a lot of oranges
One of the strangest mysteries that has fascinated me the most was the Dyatlov Pass incident. A group of hikers never returned after leaving on a trip into the Ural Mountains. The causes of death ranged from internal bleeding, head trauma and hypothermia.
A National Geographic article released last week (I posted the article below) declared that the cause of the death was releated to a small avalanche. It seems convincing enough after reading the article and watching some other recent videos about the incident (see below) but I’m curious to hear everyone else’s thoughts about the recent findings. ....

Smith Claims Big Ten Weekly Honor | Huskers Today

Kate Smith captured Big Ten Women’s Golfer-of-the-Week honors when she claimed the award on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
Smith, a fifth-year senior from Detroit Lakes, Minn., earned the recognition following her tie for third at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas on Tuesday. Smith closed the 14-team tournament with a four-under-par 68, charging 15 spots up the individual leaderboard in the final round. Smith’s third-round performance included five birdies and an eagle on the par-72, 6,258-yard layout of the Trinity Forest Golf Club.
The only golfers who finished in front of Smith in the talent-laden field were Hannah Karg of Baylor, which entered the tournament as the No. 1 team in the nation, and Oklahoma State’s Maja Stark, who has been ranked as high as the No. 8 player in the Women’s Amateur Golf Rankings. ....

K-State vs. KU gameday usually gets the vitriolic juices flowing, but this year with K-State riding an 8-game losing streak and KU losers in four of their past five games it’s difficult for fans on either side to beat their chests. Both teams just need a win, though K-State’s need is much more desperate. At the least, both teams will hope to stage a second consecutive melee-free meeting.
On-court struggles aside, the Wildcats and Jayhawks will face each other in the 294th Dillons Sunflower Showdown tonight at 7:00 in the blue barn of Lawrence. Were K-State a more competitive team, fans might have some optimism about ending the long streak of futility in Allen Fieldhouse. But with the current losing streak, compounded by the loss of DaJuan Gordon to a foot injury, optimism is not high. Rivalries are weird, though. Last year’s struggling Wildcat ....
