What is Hirayama Disease?
Hirayama disease, also known as monomelic amyotrophy, Sobue disease or Juvenile non-progressive amyotrophy is a rare and incurable disease that was first described in 1959 by Dr. Keizo Hirayama, a neurologist, attached to the Chiba University School of Medicine in Japan. It mainly affects young males aged between 15-25 years, generally after they experience their adolescent growth spurt. Technically, it is termed as a lower motor neuron disorder.
Classical findings include muscle wasting (atrophy
) and weakness of the forearms and hands, either on one or both sides. There is, however, no change in sensation and the patient doesnt experience any pain. There may be involuntary muscle twitching (fasciculations), but these are rare. The disease usually progresses for 2-5 years before stabilizing or plateauing. After plateauing, improvement in the symptoms does not occur. However, it does not worsen either. ....

DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 17: A middle aged Tibetan man who worked as a tour guide has reportedly died in a hospital in Lhasa in the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR), less than three months after being transferred from a Chinese prison, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Tuesday.
Kunchok Jinpa, 51, who was serving the 7th of a 21-year sentence died on February 6, 2021. He had suffered a brain hemorrhage and was paralyzed, HRW said citing a local source. He is believed to be moved from the regional prison at Nyetang [Ch.: Nidang], near Lhasa – to a hospital in Lhasa on November 2020. ....

Damage includes inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis), scarring or death of heart tissue (infarction), restricted blood supply to the heart (ischaemia) and combinations of all three.
The study of 148 patients from six acute hospitals in London is the largest study to date to investigate convalescing COVID-19 patients who had raised troponin levels indicating a possible problem with the heart.
Troponin is released into the blood when the heart muscle is injured. Raised levels can occur when an artery becomes blocked or there is inflammation of the heart. ....
