ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)  One in four women and one in 10 men report being the victim of domestic violence and in some of those cases victims have been forced to fight back.  A new law in New York State is now helping those who killed their abusers get a reduction in the amount of time they are required to spend behind bars.

In early April, days after he became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, Tracy White sat down in his prison dorm and wrote down four reasons why he would get the vaccine.
He wanted to protect others he comes in contact with. He wanted to protect himself from testing positive again. Upon his release, he’ll try to start his own cleaning business in Syracuse, and he didn’t want to be “alienated from society” when that happens. He wanted to be a part of the slow return to normal that he’s watched on cable TV. ....

The number of COVID-19 cases has spiked in recent weeks at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, a women’s prison that houses inmates who are pregnant as well as a nursery program for newborns. As of April 16th, 108 inmates at the facility had COVID-19 about one in five of the 529 women currently residing there. That’s up 23% from April 7th, when there were 88 inmates with COVID-19. ....

Seven months after the coronavirus pandemic hit Sing Sing Correctional Facility, a committee of incarcerated people met with administrators to discuss what was going wrong. 
First on the agenda was the spotty TV programs. Second was the damaged packages. Then the committee repeated a request they had made two months earlier: security cameras in the package room.
At the previous meeting in August, the committee said package room procedures were a “growing concern” at the all-men’s maximum-security prison in Westchester County, records show. Food started to spoil as packages were held for up to a week. Items went missing after staff checked boxes for contraband. Earlier in the summer, as a COVI ....

After spending more than three decades behind bars, the 60-year-old was dealing with the death of a good friend of COVID-19 at another prison.
