Posted: Thursday, May 6, 2021 17:22 The federal government is moving ahead with building two heavy icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard operations in the High Arctic, federal officials announced Thursday. The 150-metre-long vessels will be able to operate in heavy ice conditions for up to nine months at a time as well carrying out important science research in the High Arctic. Having two heavy icebreakers in its fleet will allow the Canadian Coast Guard to maintain a year-around presence in the Arctic, said Coast Guard Commissioner Mario Pelletier. Canada’s Coast Guard fields the world’s second largest icebreaking fleet with 18 icebreakers of varying sizes and capability. Russia is the leading icebreaking power with 40 operational vessels, including 27 ocean-going icebreakers and plans to build 11 new ships. ....

The 41st annual festival, which honors the work of College of Communication students and alumni, was streamed live on April 2. The six films nominated (five student projects and one alumni short) ranged from animation to slapstick comedy complete with whoosh-ing sound effects all highlighting the above-and-beyond efforts of the COM community during a global pandemic. “Producing quality projects during the pandemic is a significant achievement,” says Paul Schneider, a COM professor and chair of the film and television department. “The faculty are especially proud of our students, who faced endless challenges and overcame them. They have had to work under extraordinary restrictions, and instead of giving up, they persevered and produced excellent work.” ....

The Canadian Surface Combatant program, which is spearheaded by Lockheed Martin and based on BAE Systems’ Type 26 design, was first selected in 2018 and put under contract in 2019. Since the announcement, however, the ship has gone from an estimated CA$69.8 billion (U.S. $54.8 billion) to CA$77.3 billion, according to a new cost estimate by the Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer. That cost is more than double the original estimate for the program in 2008, which was exceeding about CA$28 billion in that year’s Canadian dollars, according to the report. ....
