Covid Scotland vaccine progress: 50 per cent of Western Isles adults get coronavirus jag


More than 50 per cent of all adults in the Western Isles have now received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
NHS Western Isles is now turning its attention to those aged 16 to 64 with underlying health conditions. 
A total of 11,316 people have now received their first dose, while more than 700 islanders have now received both doses.
Health officials say they are now asking younger residents to get ready and roll up their sleeves as they start inviting those eligible by telephone.
They say it is a very large group  but are working as quickly as possible to vaccinate everyone eligible in line with the vaccine supply available.   ....

More than 50 per cent of adults have been given their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine so far, NHS Western Isles has said.
Patients who are aged 16-24 with underlying health conditions in Western Isles such as Chronic respiratory disease, Diabetes mellitus and Immuno suppression Aspleniaare are now being invited to come for vaccination.
‘Very high uptake is encouraging’
NHS Western Isles Chief Executive, Gordon Jamieson, said: “In the Western Isles, we have had a very high uptake of the vaccine, which is encouraging, and we have now vaccinated 50.4 per cent of all adults (11,316 individuals in total) in the Western Isles, which is the highest vaccination rate in Scotland. ....

Covid Scotland: NHS Western Isles owes 'huge debt' to coastguard for assistance airlifting patients


The coastguard’s search and rescue helicopter team in Stornoway has been providing invaluable support to the NHS by transporting Covid patients from Barra. 
The helicopter has been sent to move people most at risk of serious illness after testing positive for the virus to Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway, in a bid to ensure they receive the urgent care they need as quickly as possible.
NHS Western Isles boss Gordon Jamieson now says the health service owes the coastguard a huge debt .
Their support is in addition to the coastguard aircraft’s search and rescue response duties – with January 2021 proving to be the busiest month on record for the Stornoway base since it opened in 2013.  ....

Visiting at a Western Isles hospital and care home has been suspended after a Covid cluster was identified.
Three residents on Barra have tested positive this week, with two of them being hospitalised.
One of them has been airlifted to a mainland hospital, while the other was transferred to Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.
Visiting at St Brendan’s hospital and care home has been suspended until further notice as a precaution. ....
