When the 1857 Rebellion broke out, the grand endeavour of mapping the country, the Great Trigonometrical Survey, had to come to a halt. And the first attempt to map Kashmir, as we know it today, would have been abandoned had Maharaja Gulab Singh not stepped in with money and hospitality when the 1857 Rebellion broke out, says new University of Cambridge research published by The Royal Society.
The paper, which “draws on (previously) unconsidered internal reports, proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society and published results of the survey”, narrates how Kashmir was mapped systematically for the first time. ....

TARAZ, Kazakhstan A court in Kazakhstan s southern Zhambyl region has handed down sentences to 51 defendants in a case over deadly ethnic clashes that shocked the Central Asian country in February 2020.
The court on April 27 sentenced eight defendants to prison terms of between 15 and 20 years after finding them guilty of murder and taking part in mass disorder.
Another defendant was sentenced to 11 years in prison, one to seven years in prison, and seven men were sentenced to five years in prison each. One defendant was acquitted while the remainder were handed parole-like freedom-limitation sentences for periods of between two and six years. ....

This is an 1878 William John Turner and Royal Geographical Society map of Xinjiang, China that traces explorations of the Forsyth Mission of 1873 - 1874, making this one of the first detailed Western maps of the region. The map depicts the region from Peshawar, Pakistan to Tibet and from the Tian Shan Mountains to Pangong Lake. British, Russian, Chinese, and Afghan territory are color coded with a key in the lower right. The routes of the Forsyth Mission are traced in red. Three different groups set out from Leh, India, to reconvene at Yarkand, in the Dominion of Yakoob Khan , and proceeded to Kashgar, where they met Yakub Beg. ....
