SANTA FE – The Santa Fe Police Department is hoping to lure officers from other agencies with generous signing bonuses, an effort aimed at combating understaffing in the department.
The department on Wednesday announced that it is offering a $15,000 signing bonus for lateral officer hires and a pay increase for current officers ranging from 1.2% to 6.06% depending on the officer’s rank.
City government gave the department $423,127 for the salary increases, which averages out to a 4% increase for each funded position, Deputy Chief Ben Valdez said.

The city is offering the bonus and raise to help the agency stay competitive and to show appreciation to staff for the hard work they’ve done during the pandemic, Valdez said. SFPD currently has 32 vacancies for uniformed officers. Fully staffed, the department would have 169 officers, meaning it is operating with a 19% shortage. ....

SANTA FE – A former Santa Fe Police Department lieutenant contends in a lawsuit that she was forced into retirement after repeatedly being retaliated against by the city of Santa Fe because she reported time card fraud and evidence room violations to supervisors.
Michele Williams, who retired late last year, filed a lawsuit Dec. 11 against the city of Santa Fe and Mayor Alan Webber. She accuses the city of violating the Whistleblower Protection Act by demoting her from a field lieutenant to an administrative position and a lower salary.
According to the lawsuit, Williams first raised concerns in December 2018 that her supervisor, Deputy Police Chief Robert Vasquez, was claiming time worked when he was out of the office. His time cards were signed-off by Chief Andrew Padilla, so Williams reported the discrepancies to then-City Manager Erik Litzenberg. ....

Ex-Cop: City and Mayor Retaliated for Whistleblowing

December 21, 2020
Michele Williams thought one day she would apply for the position of police chief and maybe even get selected for the job. She had already climbed her way through the ranks in the Santa Fe Police Department during her nearly 20 years on the force to become a field lieutenant the highest ranking female officer on the roster from that time until her retirement this past spring.
Yet, for the last eight months of her employment, she was not involved in law enforcement activities, included in staff meetings or even listed on the roster.
Williams alleges that s because when she complained about suspected timecard fraud by a commanding officer, she was moved to a desk job that didn t exist before she was assigned to it. Later, when Williams suspected problems in accounting for weapons collected in a gun-violence-prevention program, she was targeted with an investigation into her own conduct, according to documents submitted to the court as exhibits. ....
