ALPENA The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education plans to schedule a special board meeting to discuss how Thunder Bay Junior High School and Alpena High School students can have more in-person learning. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. March 2 on the online conferencing software Zoom. Superintendent David Rabbideau provided the board of education with data showing students at Thunder Bay Junior High School and Alpena High School are not performing as well as they have in past years and some of their parents may not be highly satisfied with the hybrid learning model. ....
Donajkowski ALPENA The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education censured former Trustee Steven Donajkowski on Monday because of sexualized comments he posted to Facebook about Vice President Kamala Harris. Donajkowski resigned ahead of the board of education meeting on Monday. The comment Donajkowski made on the Alpena Betterment’s Facebook page–a private group the public can request to join– was in response to a special a local restaurant was offering as part of an event for the Alpena Democratic Party held last week. Donajkowski on Monday declined comment. The resolution to censure Donajkowski states the board completely, without reservation, disavows the Feb. 5 Facebook post and comments made by him. A censure is a formal reprimand of a board member by the board. ....

ALPENA Renovations at Besser, Lincoln, and Wilson elementary schools are scheduled to begin in June. The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education on Monday awarded a little over $1.3 million in contracts so renovations at the schools can begin, part of a $33.9 million bond proposal passed by voters in March. Luke Gerhart, project manager at Wolgast Corp., told the board contractors will prepare for the work “almost immediately,” getting the preliminary work completed before construction begins in June. ....
Anna Meinhardt ALPENA Anna Meinhardt on Thursday was selected as the newest Alpena Public Schools trustee during a special school board meeting held via the videoconferencing software Zoom. Meinhardt was among three candidates interviewed for the partial term that expires on Dec. 31, 2022. Alpena residents Tim Allen and Amy Ward also applied. The seat was previously held by Keri Johns, who was appointed to serve until the general election in November. Instead of seeking reelection to the partial term, Johns ran for a full four-year term, but was not reelected. Trustees said they were impressed with all three of the candidates, but Meinhardt had a little more understanding of Michigan school finance. ....
Eric Lawson ALPENA After the name of a proposed history course was changed because Alpena High School teachers thought it might sound too political, the Alpena Public Schools Board of Education may require final approval before the course is offered to students. The board’s Curriculum and Technology Committee reviewed the proposed course last week, and two school board trustees voiced concerns. The course, Perspectives of Democracy, is being designed by Alpena High School teachers Bill Bright and Amy Brownridge, with the help of an instructional coach. The course would focus on how democracy works, why it works, and what it means to be an American citizen in today’s world, according to APS Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Meaghan Gauthier. ....
