Kaia Kanepi out of Dubai tournament


Kaia Kanepi is out of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after losing in straight sets to Shelby Rogers (U.S., ranked 49th in the world) 7:6 (4), 6:2.
Kanepi, 35, from Haapsalu, and ranked 62nd in the world, had had to qualify for the tournament, doing so by beating Ena Shibahara of Japan, and Russian player Vera Zvonareva.
In a game which lasted a little over an hour-and-three-quarters, the first set was close and went to a tie-breaker, which Rogers wrapped up convincingly with four points in a row. The second set she was even more in control, taking it 6:2.
Kanepi actually served up one more ace, at five, than her opponent, while both committed three double faults each. While the players scored practically the same proportion of their first and second services, Kanepi got just 44 percent of her first service in compared with 68 percent for Rogers. Kanepi won 54 percent of her first service points and 40 percent of her second; the same figures for Rogers were ....

Kontaveit through to Dubai last 16


Anett Kontaveit is through to the round of 16 at the WTA Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, after beating Romanian Sorana Cîrstea in two, closely-fought sets, 6:4, 7:5.
Kontaveit, ranked 43 places above her opponent at 24th in the world, didn t get off to the best of starts, with her service broken in the opening game and then losing the second. However, after winning four games in a row, and pulling back three break points in the next game, the scoreline was nearly 5:2 in the Estonian s favor, but Cirstea managed instead to hang on till things were 4:3, then pull level in the enxt game. ....

On-form Muguruza stakes claim for Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title


Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza held off a solid challenge from qualifier Irina-Camelia Begu on Monday to win 6-3 7-5 and move into the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Muguruza, who reached the Dubai semi-finals in 2015 and 2018, has earned more wins than any other player on the WTA Tour this year, and she arrived in Dubai after competing in the Doha final, where she fell to Petra Kivitova.
“It was definitely a challenge because it’s very different conditions (from Doha),” said Muguruza. “I fought as much as I could and I could close the match in two sets. I’m happy that I made it and feel like I’m getting into the tournament.” ....
