Barty is the favorite but has already been eliminated. Murray, the defending champion, withdraws.
July 25, 2021
Ashleigh Barty was eliminated in round one of the Olympic tennis tournament. Surprisingly Sara Sorribes Tormo defeated the number one player in the world in two sets. Andy Murray opted to retire from singles in the men’s competition.
Barty was 25 years old and made 55 errors. He was then broken five times by Sorribes Toros, who is 48 years younger. It was 6-3 for the Spanish and 6-4 for the Spanish after just over an hour.
Barty’s defeat is quite unexpected. The Australian won Wimbledon two weeks ago by beating Karolína Plísková in the final. This was the second Grand Slam title won by the world leader in ranking.

Wimbledon 2021 week recap: Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Roger Federer and rising teenage stars

After a one-year gap, the world’s top tennis players returned to the All England Club in London to participate in Wimbledon 2021. And despite the tournament being called off in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the allure of the only grass-court Grand Slam wasn’t diminished in the slightest. It is, after all, the game’s most coveted tournament.
The first week of Wimbledon saw some breathtaking tennis along with a number of upsets in both the women’s and men’s draws. There were tumbles, tears and some breathtaking tennis to go with it, and best of all, fans cheering on to give us a reminder of what we missed last year. And as a welcome addition, Wimbledon has introduced on-court interviews as well, giving us some wonderful interactions over the past week. The chance to express themselves in front of the Centre Court audience at SW19 was usually reserved for the finalists, but 2021 has already given us many heartwarming moments in this regard.

No. 1 Ashleigh Barty of Australia held off Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 for her 13th straight win on clay to reach the third round at the Mutua Madrid Open on Saturday.
Barty will face No. 14 Iga Swiatek of Poland, who had a 6-3, 6-3 win over Germany's Laura Siegemund.
It was Swiatek's ninth straight win on clay, dating back to her French Open win last year.
Barty, who won the previous French Open title in 2019, has never faced Swiatek.
Barty struggled with her first serve (51 percent) and unforced errors against Zidansek, but picked up a key break at 4-4 to take the first set.

Barty, Swiatek on collision course at Madrid Open - La Prensa Latina Media

Barty, Swiatek on collision course at Madrid Open
2 minutes read
Madrid, Apr 29 (EFE).- Australian world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty continued her strong run of form with a surprisingly routine 6-2, 6-1 first-round victory Thursday over American Shelby Rogers at the Mutua Madrid Open, putting herself one win away from a potential blockbuster round-of-16 clash against reigning French Open champion Iga Swiatek.
Fresh off capturing an indoor-clay title in Stuttgart last Sunday, Barty was her efficient best on serve inside Manolo Santana Stadium and that provided a lift to the other aspects of her game.
Whether opening up the court with her lethal cross-court forehand, making effective use of both her topspin and slice backhands or leveraging her underrated defense to win points from difficult positions, Barty never gave her big-hitting opponent a chance to sink her teeth into the contest.

Ashleigh Barty eased past Shelby Rogers on Thursday in the first round of the Madrid Open as the world number one prepares to try to reclaim her French Open title in Paris next month.
Barty enjoyed a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 victory over Rogers to book her place in round two, where she will face either Su-Wei Hsieh or Tamara Zidansek.
The Australian will be one of the favourites at Roland Garros after her victory there in 2019 and because of her excellent recent form.
