I’m responding to Stephen Carnahan’s July 17 letter on Trooper John Darcy’s traffic stop on someone who looked like a “thug.”
Carnahan apparently never in his life saw individuals who were up to no good. Fortunately for him, there are guardians out there like Darcy, who are always looking.
Spotting a thug takes some time and experience. It starts with a “calling” into a profession that nobody wants to do, yet everyone knows how, thanks to “training films” like CSI and Cops.
Follow that calling with four years of military service instilling discipline, structure and command presence for one’s eventual meeting with said “thug.” Or, one could go the college route, gaining knowledge of the law, eventually earning that degree that so many agencies require. The truly dedicated do both. ....

What, exactly, does a thug look like? In the July 14 article reporting that an internal State Police review found no racial profiling by Trooper John Darcy, this is the unanswered question.
Police authorities were right to be concerned that Trooper Darcy made this statement. What exactly, I’d like to know, made him think that the person he stopped “looked like a thug”?
I am not accusing the trooper of a consciously racist act. But there is a strong inclination in our society to identify African American men as criminals, and vice versa.
The word “thug” is also closely identified with Black men. ....

An investigation into alleged comments made by Trooper John Darcy before a traffic stop has cleared him of racial profiling.
Maine State Police were made aware of the incident in August of 2020, when the U.S. Attorney s Office notified them of the alleged remarks. The report claimed that a microphone in Darcy s cruiser recorded him making a racial comment about the driver of a vehicle he was about to pull over. According to the Portland Press Herald, they claimed that Darcy said the suspect looked like a thug.
Colonel John Cote, Chief of the Maine State Police, released a statement today revealing the outcome of that incident. He started by pointing out that the traffic stop, in question, did result in federal felony level charges of drug trafficking. Seized during that stop were 141 grams of cocaine powder, 880 counterfeit prescription pills, and a loaded firearm. ....

An internal investigation by the Maine State Police has found no evidence of wrongdoing by a trooper accused of racial profiling.
The U.S. Attorney s Office notified the agency in August 2020 about concerning recorded comments Trooper John Darcy made as he prepared to stop a Black motorist on the Maine Turnpike. Nearly 900 counterfeit prescription pills, cocaine, and a loaded firearm were seized from the vehicle, but the U.Ss Attorney dismissed charges after a video of the stop was released publicly.
State Representative Jeff Evangelos made a formal complaint alleging racial profiling, which prompted a review of more than 1,000 traffic stops conducted by Darcy. ....
