No Brewery Opened in Denver in 2020, but 2021 Is a Different Story

After a decade of frenzied openings that saw the number of craft breweries within Denver city limits rise from eight or nine in early 2010 to more than 75 by the end of 2019, not a single brewery with a Denver address opened in 2020. Meanwhile, six breweries in the city closed their doors last year.
But 2021 will be very, very different. Two breweries have already opened: Denver Beer Co. s second Denver taproom (its third overall) on South Downing Street, and Odell Brewing s Sloan s Lake Taphouse, which is also this brewery s second Denver spot. And six more should open over the next few months, including Wah Gwaan Brewing, Cohesion Brewing, Smash Face Brewing, Danico Brewing and Ratio Beerworks, which will debut its second location inside the former Declaration Brewing spot on South Cherokee Street. A.C. Golden Brewing, a Coors subsidiary, will also unveil a branded taproom (but not a brewery) near Coors Field. ....

Good River Beer Files for Bankruptcy After Alleged Embezzlement

Founded in 2015, Good River made a name for itself locally with beer that it brewed at contract locations and sold to bars, restaurants and liquor stores. But the owners were always looking for a taproom location where they could make the beer themselves and welcome customers. That finally happened in November 2019 after Good River merged with Renegade Brewing and took over Renegade s former production space at 918 West First Avenue, in the Yard on Santa Fe, renovating a good chunk of it into a 75-seat taproom.
The two breweries also got a big financial investment from the Little Pub Company, which owns twenty or so local bars and restaurants, including the British Bulldog, the Elm and Don s Club Tavern. The three entities planned to open a third location, but the merger imploded in May, partially because of the pandemic, which damaged sales for all three businesses. ....

Good River Beer Co. has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, but the beer will keep on flowing.
Denver-based Sleeping Giant Brewing, which has already been contract brewing Good River’s products, is one of the company’s largest creditors and will be taking over the Good River brand.
“Good River beers will remain on the shelf,” Sleeping Giant founder Matthew Osterman said. “The company’s filing is simply part of a restructuring within the brand.”
Osterman said Sleeping Giant will continue production of Good River’s brews “indefinitely and uninterrupted.” ....
