Spike in school district staff absences shows need for educator vaccinations


Staff absences due to infections and quarantines reached worrying levels.
“We had a couple of schools that we were getting a little concerned about being able to staff,” communications director Charlotte Reynolds said.
Munger Mountain Elementary School and Jackson Hole High School were the hardest hit by staff absences, she said. On Jan. 28, the last day of in-person classes last week, 37 employees (7.36%) were out districtwide due to COVID-19 infection or exposure, and 62 (12.33%) were out for all reasons combined.
Those are the highest numbers the district has seen since starting to report absence data in January. This week, Reynolds said, absences have dropped to manageable levels, with 13 staff members out due to COVID infection or exposure Wednesday. ....

Vaccinated: Jackson Hole's ski patrol, Search and Rescue


Amid the hustle and bustle of a Tuesday morning vaccination clinic in late December, Tom Ferris, a 25-year veteran of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s ski patrol, became one of the first few thousand people in Teton County to get a vaccine against COVID-19.
“I know I speak for all of us: We feel fortunate to be on the list,” the 61-year-old said shortly after getting his first jab. “I’m just hopeful that it becomes available for everybody soon.”
This week and next, ski patrollers and Teton County Search and Rescue volunteers who accepted their first vaccine dose are getting their booster shot. That’s intended to augment the immune response the first dose created, bringing inoculations up to full efficacy. ....
