Successful launch of Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, its 'eyes' designed by U-M researchers

 E-Mail
A five-year quest to map the universe and unravel the mysteries of dark energy is beginning officially today, and University of Michigan researchers were instrumental in the project s development.
The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, or DESI, is an international collaboration under the aegis of the Department of Energy s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with primary funding from DOE s Office of Science. The project aims to create a 3D map of the universe, unraveling the mysterious dark energy. To complete its quest, the instrument will capture and study the light from tens of millions of galaxies and other distant objects in the universe. ....

The premise of getting rich by picking the right stocks can be downright intoxicating. The fact is, however, that most individual investors, as well as professionals, tend to underperform the broad market.
And the really active investors often see the worst results. The most active traders are believed to actually lose money, victims of misleading messages that this game is easy to play . and win. ....

Berkeley researchers develop new compostable plastic

Berkeley researchers develop new compostable plastic
Shane McGlaun - Apr 22, 2021, 5:56am CDT
There’s a lot of effort put into recycling plastics, glass, and other materials all around the US. Despite efforts towards recycling, less than nine percent of plastic currently gets recycled in the country, with most ending up in landfills or polluting the environment. Researchers believe that biodegradable plastic bags and containers could help ease pollution, but they can contaminate recyclable plastics if not correctly sorted.
Researchers note that most biodegradable plastics also take months to break down, and when they do break down, they form microplastics. Microplastics are particularly damaging because they can end up in the oceans and inside the bodies of animals and humans alike. Researchers at the Department of Energy Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and UC Berkeley have designed an enzyme-activated compostable plastic that could diminish ....

The US Is Closer to a Zero-Carbon Grid Than It Seems

The U.S. has a lot of work to do to draw down carbon emissions. But a new report shows that when it comes to the energy grid, things are actually in better shape than researchers thought it’d be by this point.

The analysis from the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory takes a look back at federal projections from the Energy Information Administration from 2005. The agency forecast that carbon pollution tied to electricity generation would increase 600 million metric tons between 2005 and 2020, a 25% increase from 2,400 million tons.
That’s not what happened, though. Instead, carbon emissions from the grid actually fell to 1,450 million metric tons in 2020. That’s a 40% reduction compared to 2005 and 52% below where the EIA thought grid-related emissions would be by now. ....
