Pollution near school has become unbearable for pupils and staff Share ILLEGAL dumping next to Manzomthombo High School, in Mfuleni, has led to illness and less teaching time, as the stench is too much to bear for pupils and teachers. Using World Environment Day recently to highlight their plight, pupils at the school shared their experiences with peers at Fairdale and Bardale high schools, also near Mfuleni, on the struggles they each bear. Manzomthombo High School pupils highlighted their learning conditions, which includes the adjacent field being used as an illegal dumping site. There is a blocked drain nearby that is also affecting the reception area.

Deschutes County Solid Waste holding household hazardous waste disposal events Deschutes County BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) Deschutes County’s Department of Solid Waste is hosting special one-day collection events in Sisters, La Pine and Redmond this summer where residents can drop off household hazardous waste for free. At these events, residents can drop off household hazardous waste products such as lawn and gardening materials, photo and pool/spa chemicals, paint, cleaning solutions, motor oil and used batteries, fluorescent bulbs and tubes and small propane tanks (5-gallon BBQ size and smaller). Business-generated hazardous waste,  medical waste, explosives, fireworks, ammunition, drums/barrels, compressed gas cylinders will not be accepted.

Deschutes County Budgets For Growth

Deschutes County has released its proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2022. The total proposed budget, including County Service Districts, is $634,746,104, which represents an increase of 23 percent increase from last year's adopted budget. Changes from last year are largely being driven by the addition of $38 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding and $41 million in capital investments. The County's total proposed operating budget, which best reflects the County's actual spending as it excludes contingency, unappropriated balances and internal transactions, is $338.4 million. After compensating for changes in capital projects, debt service costs and the addition of ARPA funding, the increase is 3.8 percent from the prior year. "Deschutes County continues to grow and that growth is translating to a need, in certain areas, to expand staff and programming to meet increasing service demands," said County Administrator Tom Anderson.
