Mutations in the spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2 select for amino acid changes, increasing protein stability

Mutations in the spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2 select for amino acid changes, increasing protein stability
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), continues to spread globally. As of July 1, 2021, over 182 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported worldwide, which has led to the deaths of almost 4 million.
As vaccination efforts commenced in most countries, new variants threaten the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. For example, SARS-CoV-2 variants with mutations in their spike (S) protein may increase infectivity, heightened risk of death, and immune escape.
A team of researchers at the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at the University College London demonstrated that mutations in the S protein of SARS-CoV-2 select for amino acid changes that result in a more stable protein than would otherwise be expected. ....

Can X-ray Ptychography be used in Smaller Laboratory Source Facilities?

May 12 2021
X-ray ptychography has recently opened up applications across physical and life sciences at large-scale synchrotron facilities such as the UK’s Diamond Light Source, by producing quantitative phase images with the highest possible spatial resolutions (10’s nm) – going well beyond the conventional limitations of the available X-ray optics. Now an international collaboration of scientists has demonstrated for the first time how the technique of high-resolution phase contrast diffraction imaging can be performed with small-scale laboratory sources.
The team from Diamond Light Source, Ghent University, University of Sheffield, and University College London conducted an experiment with a compact liquid metal-jet (LMJ) X-ray source. Laboratory X-ray sources have significantly lower levels of brilliance but currently provide the X-ray synchrotron user community with access to micro-CT, where they can gain a great deal of experience and p ....

Remembering Professor John Mallard who pioneered MRI technology

But his was not a story of huge resource and big financial backing. It was Mallard’s leadership, tenacity and can-do approach that drove a scientific breakthrough still pivotal to medical treatment today.
Professor Mallard saw the ‘big picture’ before anyone else
His Aberdeen story began in 1965 when he relocated to the city from London to become the University’s first Chair of Medical physics. He began to assemble a team, appointing Jim Hutchison to work on a project exploring the possible medical uses of magnetic resonance.
