Firearm injury study and violence prevention, intervention program aim to break cycle for at-risk populations
Firearm injury continues to plague our country, with more people suffering nonfatal firearm-related injuries than firearm deaths. While much research has been done on fatal gun injuries, less is understood about nonfatal firearm injuries and interventions.
But that is about to change, thanks to a recent study from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT) and a new hospital and community violence prevention and intervention program at MUSC Health, led by Ashley Hink, M.D., assistant professor of surgery in the College of Medicine and an acute care specialist. ....

Anti-poverty policies can reduce reports of child neglect

 E-Mail
Providing economic relief to struggling families can lead to another positive effect fewer cases of child neglect, according to new research by the University of Washington.
A 10% increase in a common benefit for low- to moderate-income working families, the Earned Income Tax Credit, led to a 9% decrease in the annual number of reports of child neglect made to child welfare agencies over a 14-year study period. That s a significant impact, researchers say, and can inform future social policies.
The study is relevant to current policy actions, as President Joe Biden has recently proposed an expansion of the child tax credit as part of his new stimulus plan. ....

Insurance status doesn't alter trauma care outcome in Ghana

Insurance status doesn’t alter trauma care outcome in Ghana
Being enrolled in the national health insurance plan reduced catastrophic expenditures by 70% but did not eliminate significant out-of-pocket costs, study finds.
Newswise Trauma, which worldwide accounts for more than 5 million deaths per year, is a major cause of death in low- and middle-income countries. It has been estimated that improved trauma care could prevent as many as 2 million of those deaths. A key element of reducing trauma-related deaths is making sure injured patients, who need surgery, get to the operating room in a timely manner.
In a new study, a team of Ghanaian and U.S. researchers examined whether having insurance affected trauma patients’ out-of-pocket costs and their chances to get timely surgical care after being admitted to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, a large teaching hospital in Kumasi, Ghana, a city of 3.3 million. ....
