Tulane alumni couple's $2 million gift will target climate change, coastal issues via two professorships, symposia


 
Haunted by memories of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation, an alumni couple with deep ties to Tulane and New Orleans has made a $2 million gift to the university that aims to pack a one-two punch against climate change and coastal erosion. David and Jane Flowerree have established two professorships aimed at finding solutions to the environmental crisis facing Louisiana and other areas threatened by rising seas, warming temperatures, and weather-driven disasters.
The School of Science and Engineering (SSE) will serve as home to the David and Jane Flowerree Professorship in River-Coastal Science and Engineering, which will be held by an early-career academic. Founded in 2017 and chaired by Professor Mead A. Allison, the Department of River-Coastal Science and Engineering focuses on river, deltaic and coastal systems using Tulane’s innovative science and engineering approach. ....

Tulane University names five new members to its main governing board

Diener serves as the treasurer of both the Miami Children’s Museum and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and is on the board for other Jewish educational and social charities. She was CFO of Hotel Reservations Network, the predecessor to Hotels.com. She earned a bachelor of science degree in management and accounting from the A. B. Freeman School of Business and a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Florida. She said she is driven by a desire to give back to Tulane, which has been a big part of her family, and is chair of the President’s Council, a member of the Parents Council and co-chair of Tulane’s National Campaign Council for South Florida. The Dieners also recently funded the Diener Family Endowed Fund for Student Success in support of the Academic Success Center at Tulane, school officials said. ....

Tulane University welcomes five new board members


 
Five new members have joined the Board of Tulane, the university’s main governing body.
“These individuals have an incredible legacy of commitment to and support of Tulane and numerous other institutions across the country,” Tulane President Michael A. Fitts said. “Through their love and commitment to Tulane, I know that they will provide the best counsel and leadership for our university.”
The new board members include Michelle S. Diener, Arnold W. Donald, Suzanne Barton Grant and Donald J. Peters, Jr.
