We can expect a ship to come through the canal soon, the Coast Guard is out chopping ice up to make way for the boats.
Boreal says in the next two weeks, the Coast Guard will make their way up to Thunder Bay then to the Apostle Islands, where they will take a couple of days to break the ice, according to the Coast Guard.
The locks of Sault Ste Marie will open on March 25th, so the cutter has to have everything passable by that time so they can make it to their respective ports. Boreal reports that the NOAA says the peak ice level happened in mid-February. ....

Great Lakes shipping down only 1.7% this navigation season despite coronavirus pandemic

Great Lakes shipping only declined by 1.7% during the 2020 navigation season, despite the turmoil the coronavirus pandemic unleashed on the global economy.
The seawayâs 62nd navigation season was one of the most remarkable in history, said Craig Middlebrook, deputy administrator of the U.S. Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp.Â Despite all the challenges throughout the year, it was one of the safest and smoothest seasons on record. The final tonnage results continue to demonstrate the resilience of the bi-national waterway and its ability to remain competitive in the global marketplace.â
During the 2020 shipping season, shipments of grain rose 27.1% year-over-year to 13.3 million, coal 2% to 2.4 million, gypsum 32.8% to 859,000, asphalt 30.9% to 372,000 and steel slabs 181.7% to 503,000. ....

Cargo strong on Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway

Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway ports and ship operators are hoping for a strong finish to an otherwise turbulent year. Cargo totals on the St. Lawrence Seaway hit nearly 32.3 million metric tons (from April 1- Nov. 30), down 6.6% from 2019.
Compared to previous months, the improvement in total cargo figures in November is due in large part to grain shipments, which have been strong since the fall harvest began. Year-to-date grain shipments via the Seaway (including Canada and the U.S.) are up 23%. U.S. grain specifically is up nearly 20%. The large increases aree welcomed by ports and industry officials, who anticipate the trend to continue into 2021. Year-to-date shipments of iron ore (down 13%), dry bulk (down 15%) and liquid bulk (down 36%) remain down. ....

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority has completed its $950,000 purchase of the Duluth Lake Port dock on Rice s Point, advancing plans to rehabilitate a stretch of properties in the region.
The 7.5-acre Duluth Lake Port dock and a 3.5-acre slip date to the 1880s and were previously used as a flour mill, grain elevators and storage.
The purchase closed Dec. 1, officials announced Thursday, and includes land, buildings, the slip and 3,000 feet of rail lines that connect to the city s adjacent Clure Public Marine Terminal and to the CN Duluth Intermodal Terminal. ....

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority last week finalized acquisition of the Duluth Lake Port dock on Rice’s Point. The Port Authority said in a news release Thursday it is intent on revitalizing the nearly 140-year-old dock.
Located immediately northwest of the Port Authority’s First Clure Terminal Expansion, but separated from it by the Azcon Metals recycling property, the 7.5-acre Duluth Lake Port dock and 3.5-acre slip date back to the 1880s, when Duluth Imperial Mill built the site’s initial flour mill and grain elevators. ....
