Report: Fire ignites aboard decommissioned ship in Duluth scrapyard

Firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a fire aboard a decommissioned ship docked at a Duluth scrapyard.
Hubbard Broadcasting sister station WDIO-TV reports the fire was visible from the 118-year-old J.B. Ford, docked at at Azcon Metals on Rice s Point, at 3:20 p.m.
At about 3:45 p.m., WDIO reported crews pulled apart a structure on the ship s top deck.
The ship had been at its present location since 2016.
Duluth city spokesperson Kate Van Daele told WDIO crews were dismantling the ship when a spark ignited the wood in a cabin area.

The oldest intact lake freighter still floating caught fire in Duluth on Monday.
The Duluth Fire Department says crews responded at 3:21 p.m. to a call involving the J.B. Ford, a lake freighter that was in the process of being scrapped.
According to FOX 21, the freighter was being dismantled at Azon Scrapyard on Rice s Point near the Blatnik Bridge.
The fire department says a spark hit 118-year-old wood in the captain s area of the freighter, causing the fire. ....

Port Authority Acquires Lake Port Dock

DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Duluth Seaway Port Authority has finalized the acquisition of the Duluth Lake Port Dock on Rice’s Point.
The 7.5 acre property includes a 3.5 acre slip and was originally used for a flour mill and grain elevators.
According to Deb DeLuca, the Seaway Authority executive director, the future use of the property is still in the planning stages but could eventually become a second expansion of the Clure Terminal.
The property is currently separated from the Clure Terminal by Azcon Metals recycling.
DeLuca says the purchase will help to strengthen the port’s working waterfront and bring new opportunities to Rice’s Point. ....

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority last week finalized acquisition of the Duluth Lake Port dock on Rice’s Point. The Port Authority said in a news release Thursday it is intent on revitalizing the nearly 140-year-old dock.
Located immediately northwest of the Port Authority’s First Clure Terminal Expansion, but separated from it by the Azcon Metals recycling property, the 7.5-acre Duluth Lake Port dock and 3.5-acre slip date back to the 1880s, when Duluth Imperial Mill built the site’s initial flour mill and grain elevators. ....
