When Ben Gonzalez and Dave Daly decided to start an oyster farm, Dave knew exactly where he wanted to raise bivalves.
His great-grandfather, Thomas Daly, bought a large Southold property in 1919 to get his family away from the flu pandemic sweeping through New York. He put down roots, and over the decades the family extended and built houses all around him. Dave grew up sailing in Southold Bay, and riding the ferry across to Shelter Island for ice cream.
Dave and Ben picked out an underwater lease site in Southold Bay for their new farm in 2013, one of the 10 leases granted by Suffolk County for aquaculture that year. ....

Colorado Chains With the Most COVID-19 Outbreaks January 2021 Update

Colorado has a new leader in the contest for the state s most ignominious honor: the national chain with the most outbreaks of COVID-19. Kroger, the grocery giant whose affiliates here operate under the King Soopers and City Market nameplates, has been surpassed by Walmart, with a stunning eleven new Colorado outbreaks in a little over a month.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment considers an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location are confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period are paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis. The vast majority of businesses and facilities identified as outbreaks remain open, while working with the department to monitor symptoms and prevent future infections. ....

Justice Reform: Seeking Officers of Color; Conversation with Cops

Pictured Above: At a June 1, 2020 vigil for George Floyd at Stotzky Park in Riverhead
The lack of officers of color and of communication between the police and communities they serve has been on the minds of residents who’ve spoken up at the latest law enforcement public listening sessions in Riverhead and on the North Fork, as East End town task forces prepare reports required by New York State.
These task forces are being convened all over the state under an executive order issued by Governor Andrew Cuomo last June, in the wake of the worldwide protests over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, requiring municipal law enforcement agencies to review policing practices “to promote community engagement, to foster trust, fairness, and legitimacy, and to address any racial bias and disproportionate policing of communities of color.” ....

'Lost, forgotten and left behind': Mount Hope residents turn to each other, new leadership to build community

SAN DIEGO
When longtime Mount Hope resident Demetrius Gonzales describes the neighborhood he has called home for more than 40 years, he uses few words.
“Lost, forgotten and left behind,” he says of the southeastern San Diego neighborhood of mostly single-family homes.
Little has changed there to improve the lives of residents over the decades, he says.
“Things are the same . Where are the jobs in the community? Education? There’s nothing,” Gonzales said.

Community activist Charles Alexander says the neighborhood has long been ignored by the city. There are few jobs in the area and an obvious lack of resources, he said. ....
