George Borrello, R-Sunset Bay disagree with Cuomo’s assessment. The governor is looking to boost broadband access by requiring private companies to provide a $15 rate so that low-income residents can have access to broadband internet. There are pockets of Chautauqua County lagging behind in internet access according to a fall 2020 survey compiled by the state Education Department. The New York Civil Liberties Union recently filed a Freedom of Information Law request for the survey, which showed that more than 165,000 students in New York state (6%) lacked internet access. In Chautauqua County, 1,058 of the county’s 18,353 students (5.76%) had no access to internet. The same percentage of students had no access to a device to access the internet. ....

Jack R. Engdahl Jack R. Engdahl, 80, of Ashmar Lane, Jamestown, N.Y., passed away at 4:11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2021, in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong area resident, he was born May 30, 1940, in Jamestown, N.Y,, a son of the late Robert O. and Genevieve Parker Engdahl. Jack was a 1958 graduate of Mayville Central School. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Brockport State University in 1962 and his Master of Science in education from Fredonia State in 1968. He furthered his education by receiving his school administrator and supervisor certificate in 1979 and his school district administrator certification in 1980 from Fredonia State University. ....
Apr 8, 2021 Tim Galati, a senior at Southwestern Central School, has been awarded the 2021 Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship by the Audubon Community Nature Center. Every spring since 2003 Audubon Community Nature Center education staff have raised scholarship funds through their Birdathon on the first Saturday in May. Participants look for as many species as possible and generous supporters pledge an amount, either per species or in total. For the first time, this year’s birdathon extends over nine days, from May 1 to May 9. Amounts raised above the $500 for the Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship will go toward the Pamela A. Westrom Wildlife Habitat now under construction. ....
