Prince George's Schools Start Hybrid Learning Amid Concerns – NBC4 Washington


Prince George’s is the last district in the D.C. area to phase back in-person learning.
Nearly a third of families indicated they wanted to return to in-person learning, according to Prince George’s County Public Schools. That’s about 42,000 students.
A group of parents, teachers and others organized by PG Change Makers voiced their concerns Thursday at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt.
“It hasn’t gotten better, it’s gotten worse,” Greenbelt Mayor Colin Byrd said.
“This is a problem where parents had the opportunity to chose, and students. But teachers didn’t. They were forced into circumstances, to chose between their livelihood or their life,” said Krystal Oriadha. ....

Prince George s County teachers are set to return to classrooms Wednesday. Although students won t return yet, many are concerned about teachers health and safety. News4 s Justin Finch reports.
Educators and the Prince George’s County teachers union are concerned it’s too soon and last week protested to say they should not be forced to return to school until it s safe.
Teachers are concerned with levels of community spread, and some have not received their second round of vaccinations.
Others are worried that the new COVID-19 work environment violates parts of their contract.
They say the classrooms are too small to socially distance, aren t disinfected adequately and the ventilation system is not powerful enough. ....

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - Just as students are starting to head back in the classroom during the coronavirus pandemic, they are also finding out standardized tests will be mandatory this year.
Last year, standardized testing was canceled as the pandemic closed school buildings across the county. However, on Monday, the United States Department of Education sent this letter stating schools have to provide exams this year. They said the testing will help schools understand the impact of the pandemic and how to help students. ....
