Describing Covid-19 vaccines as global public goods, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said Bangladesh believes in primacy of United Nations and other international institutions to meet everyone s demand for vaccines and medical requirements on the basis of equity and justice.
All nations need to work together to make the UN and other international organisations effective so that everyone s requirement of vaccines and medical requirement are met, she said.
In her recorded speech aired in the plenary of a conference of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), the premier also said the WHO, GAVI and other relevant organisations must uphold the rights of the member states and ensure equity and justice. ....

This article presents the evolving policy of regional trade agreements in the Indian Ocean region with India at the helm of affairs. Besides the existing arrangements such as Association of Southeast Asian Nations and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, new partnerships are on the horizon including the recently concluded Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, the Indian Ocean Rim Association, and the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor. In the process, the Indian Ocean region looks at advancing South–South cooperation. The challenge remains to prioritise collective steps toward trade and development while envisaging people-friendly international trade governance. ....

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) Tuesday approved a Taka 16,918.59 crore South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Dhaka-Sylhet Corridor Road Development project in a bid to ensure overall economic development by improving regional road connectivity.
The approval came from the 22nd ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year (FY21) held with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The premier chaired the meeting virtually from her official Ganobhaban residence while ministers, state ministers and secretaries concerned joined the meeting from the NEC Conference Room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area. ....
