CARBAONDALE (WSIL) The 17th annual Southern Illinois Music Festival is kicking off with more than a dozen performances put on by talented artists from all over the country.
The festival includes a dozen and a half performances. Some are free admission. Everything else is reasonably priced the performances. The opera is here at Shryrock Auditorium. We have four or five performances at First United Church of Carbondale, explains Artistic Director Edward Benyas.
Benyas says they will present a variety of chamber orchestra and chamber music performances but the opera has a unique spin. It s called Covid fan tutte . It is a Mozart opera that is originally named Così fan tutte and it is one of the greatest operas ever written and it s brilliantly updated by our stage director Josh Shaw. CARBONDALE, Ill. The 17th annual and nationally recognized Southern Illinois Music Festival returns to the region next month featuring a strong lineup of concert and opera performances that will attract both young and older audiences.
The festival runs July 6-18 and features the works of well-known composers, including Felix Mendelssohn, Dmitri Shostakovich, Antonio Vivaldi, Reinhold Gliere, Guiseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Festival artists include members of the Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, and Washington National Opera, and they come from North and South America, Europe and Asia. Performances will be held at sites throughout the region and range from intimate concerts to a fully produced opera. ....

CARBONDALE, Ill. Shaking off the winter doldrums and inactivity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra (SISO) continues its season with a performance later this month. The serenade will feature romantic works for wind ensembles written by composers Antonin Dvořák and Richard Strauss.
The performance is Feb. 23 at Shryock Auditorium on the SIU campus. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. David Tuttle, Southern Illinois Music Festival personnel manager and basset horn player in the Strauss Symphony, will present a public lecture about Richard Strauss on Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. in Shryock Auditorium. Admission is free but advance reservations are required ....
