Earlier this year, it looked like Excelsior would be forced for the second year in a row to cancel July 4 fireworks the biggest and possibly oldest holiday display on Lake Minnetonka, drawing upward of 10,000 people to the city in a typical year because of lack of funds.
Then a group of donors came to the rescue, offering to sponsor this year s event. They made only one request: that the fireworks be moved to Deephaven.
Viewers are still being encouraged to watch the show from Excelsior Commons, the 13-acre public park where the show has been held almost every year for more than a century. Man dies of suspected drowning on Lake Minnetonka

A man is dead after a suspected drowning on Lake Minnetonka on Thursday night.
The Hennepin County Sheriff s Office said its Water Patrol unit received a report of a swimmer who d gone underwater at Commons Beach in Excelsior at about 6 p.m.
Three Water Patrol boats responded along with South Lake Minnetonka Police, Excelsior Fire and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and a conservation officer saw the swimmer underwater.
According to the sheriff s office, the conservation officer and a deputy jumped into the water and were able to pull the victim out of the water and into a patrol boat. Lifesaving measures then began until they got to shore and paramedics took over. ....

A portion of both directions of Hwy. 7 in the west metro will remain closed until midafternoon Thursday after a vehicle crashed into a utility pole and toppled power lines earlier in the day.
The highway was closed betwen Oak Street in Excelsior and Christmas Lake Road in Greenwood, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.
Xcel Energy crews spent most of the morning making repairs and restoring power to about 1,600 customers who lost service. Most power had been restored by 11:30 a.m., according to the utility s online outage map. ....

TONKA BAY, Minn. It could’ve been a dramatically different outcome, if not for the lifesaving efforts of first responders and a miracle of timing.
Around midnight on Friday, Dec. 4, Grace Hornbaker was driving a familiar road home – Manitou Road in Tonka Bay – when she suddenly veered off the road, hit a power line pole and ended upside down in Lake Minnetonka.
“I took a sec to think, O.K., where am I? What just happened? And just kind of realize my surroundings,” Hornbaker told KARE 11 on Thursday. ....
