The demolition of Banks High School/Middle School was the end of an era for many, as it served as the place they developed their personal foundation. For years, the old building stood vacant and now the city of Birmingham is working on a $400,000 project to clear the land and begin new development of the area. “Banks has served this community well, and now it’s time we serve Roebuck Springs and South East Lake just as well by providing new opportunity for its residents,” Mayor Randall Woodfin said. ....

Authorities ID 25-year-old man killed in east Birmingham shooting Updated 9:43 PM; Today 9:42 PM A 25-year-old man was shot to death Monday, May 17, 2021 in the 7700 block of Sixth Avenue South. Facebook Share Birmingham police on Tuesday evening identified the victim as Tavarius Hampton. He was 25. The shooting happened at 12:27 p.m. Monday in the 7800 block of Sixth Avenue South. Officers arrived to find Hampton critically injured and asked for a rush on the medics. Hampton was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Sgt. Rod Mauldin said the preliminary investigation suggests that the victim was seen leaving a bag on the porch of a residence when he was approached by the occupants of the home. He said he did not know what was in the bag. ....
