The seating in South Cliff Gardens is described by Historic England as: “a structure that captures the spirit of Scarborough’s notable and long-standing social history as an important seaside resort”.
The Grade II listing means the shelter gains extra protection from any future development of the area.
The application to Historic England for listed status came from Chris Perry, a member of Scarborough Civic Society.
The shelter has been grade II listed by Historic England
“Consultants working on the restoration of the garden said the shelters were of historic interest, and I took that as a hint,” she said. ....

Celebrating the region's cultural sites given Listed status this year

A WALL incorporating an 18th century water supply point and seafront sheltered seating are among the new sites added to Historic England s Grade II list this year.
Several sites across the region have been added to the National Heritage List for England in the past 12-months and Historic England is celebrating their new protection.
Among the new entries is a 220-year-old lamp-post in Richmond which is a very early example of public street lighting.
It is an elegant wrought iron structure positioned on a wall at the junction of Bargate and Cornforth, near the town centre.
Originally, its lamp, which is no longer present, was fuelled by oil, but in 1830 it was converted to gas following the establishment of the Richmond Gasworks in 1821. ....
