Derry Town Council OKs March polling spot, electioneering rules

DERRY â Town councilors faced a hefty agenda at its Dec. 15 meeting, approving several measures including a single polling location for the March town/school local elections, and updating town rules when it comes to potentially hazardous situations in the community.
Fire Chief Michael Gagnon presented the information on the 2020 updated Hazardous Mitigation Plan, a requirement of the townâs emergency operations plan that is in place so federal disaster-related funding can be received.
Gagnon said the town collaborates with the Southern New Hampshire Planning Commission on these efforts, to help identify hazards in the community and put plans in place to help reduce the impact ....

New Hampshire Seeing Largest Population Increase in New England

Estimates from the U.S. Census suggest much of Northeast is losing population, but New Hampshire is seeing a slight increase.
A brief from the Carsey School of Public Policy at UNH shows that over the past year, most New England states saw a population decrease, with the exception of New Hampshire and Maine.
In the past four years, New Hampshire has experienced the largest percentage growth, but it’s small: less than half a percent annually.
Everything is relative,” says Dr. Kenneth Johnson, a demographer at UNH who authored the Carsey School brief. “Relative to U.S. growth patterns, it’s modest. Compared to the South and the West, it’s low. Compared to the Northeast and large parts of the Midwest, it’s not high but it s certainly higher.” ....

Francestown residents can attend a virtual volunteer fair on Thursday evening to connect to agencies in need of help. Attendees will hear from directors and volunteers from the Community Volunteer Transportation Company, Home Healthcare Hospice and Community Services, and the Grapevine Family and Community Resource Center about volunteer opportunities and the impacts the local organizations have on senior citizens’ lives.
Francestown is being prioritized right now because of a regional shortage of volunteer drivers, who assist people who are unable to drive themselves to appointments, organizer Sylvia von Aulock from the Southern New Hampshire Planning Commission said. A survey the SNHPC conducted this summer reflected a drastic drop-off in volunteer drivers. “Many of the people who volunteer are older,” von Aulock said, and either they or their families asked them to stop volunteering in order to s ....
