Devon and Cornwall police chief demands 500 more officers to cope with staycationers


A police chief  has demanded an extra 500 police officers to cope with the millions of staycationers who will descend on Devon and Cornwall in the summer after lockdown ends. 
Families across the country are already planning staycations and days out after Boris Johnson announced Britain s roadmap out of lockdown.
From April 12, Britons can stay in self-contained holiday cottages - with Devon and Cornwall among the most popular destinations.
It is estimated that the population of the two counties swells from 1.7million to more than 11million at the peak of the holiday season.
Now, Inspector Andrew Berry - the counties Police Federation chair - has demanded more police officers for his region amid concerns that police will struggle to cope with the huge influx of boozy holidaymakers. ....

Devon and Cornwall’s position as the UK’s favourite holiday destination has once again been in the headlines, as first Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced his intention to head here this summer, then Labour leader Keir Starmer said he would too.
Of course, there’s also the small matter of the G7 leaders’ summit which is due to be held in Carbis Bay. It should bring Prime Ministers and Presidents from around the world to the resort, near St Ives in Cornwall, in June. ....

The next in our series of reflections on 2020 in the on-trade, award-winning chef and pub operator Nicholas Hack looks back on a ‘yoyo’ of tiers and lockdowns and building his business on 12 months of shifting sands.
It started as a positive year for us here at the Cadeleigh Arms.
We had just received news we had been nominated in to the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs, won Exeter Living Awards best Gastropub and runners up for the Most Dog Friendly Pub in the South West Tourism awards, and runner up for
Food Magazine’s​ Best Chef.
Then March came.
Boris announcing for people to stay away from pubs was more damaging than actually telling us to close. Business suddenly switched off like the flick of a switch. ....
