Benzie County is Home to the Latest Affordable Housing Project

It’s the latest effort to provide affordable housing, and this time the effort is focused on Benzie County. Construction crews are getting to work on the latest affordable housing project, and this one is being developed – and built – by a nonprofit group.
The affordable housing crisis is nothing new. In fact it’s why HomeStretch was created as a nonprofit housing corporation more than 20 years ago. Now comes the latest effort to supply affordable housing – this time in the Village of Honor. HomeStretch Executive Director Jon Stimson says, “We’re installing eight apartments. Two stories, two bedroom townhouse-style apartments. And we can house up to 36 people maximum.” ....

SCOTUS Rules on Eviction Moratorium

The US Supreme Court will allow a moratorium on evictions to remain in place.
That ruling came down Tuesday night. The moratorium is designed to protect renters during the coronavirus pandemic. In the 5-4 decision, the court denied a request from a group of realtors and landlords to lift the eviction ban, which was first issued by the CDC in September 2020.
It prevents landlords from evicting certain tenants who fall behind on their rent. The Traverse City Housing Commission points out the moratorium is already scheduled to end in July.  Executive Director Tony Lentych says, “Even one of the justices said ‘it’s not worth the unrest to end it early.’ What’s going to happen July 31 ....

Affordable Housing Project Approved for Traverse City

The Traverse City Board of Commissioners approved a project and tax cuts that will allow the Traverse City Housing Commission to move forward with a plan to build multiple low income housing units by 2022.
The Director of the Northwest Michigan Coalition to End Homelessness, Ashley Halladay-Schmadt, says they’ve been working with them to make it happen.   
Ashley says, “We have the right players at the table, we have community support, but we need permanent housing. We need landlords that will work with us, we need need developers that can come into our community at an affordable rate and develop housing across our region.” ....
