Cybersecurity Exec. Order Prompted by Colonial Pipeline Cyberattack

The Colonial Pipeline cyberattack prompted the issuance of a long-awaited executive order (EO) on improving U.S. cybersecurity. The EO mandates that, within six months, all federal agencies implement multi-factor authentication (MFA) and both at-rest and in-transit encryption. It also calls for agencies to comprehensively log, share, and analyze information about cyber incidents and creates a Cyber Safety Review Board to that end. The EO sets deadlines for agencies to write guidelines for securing software and detecting threats.

Federal Chief Information Security Officer Chris DeRusha explained today that the foundational elements of the Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) program are fundamental to moving Federal government network security to zero trust concepts and that implementation of the program only becomes more important as cyber threats increase.

Granholm says cyber R&D is a priority at DOE -- FCW

Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm on Thursday said cybersecurity research and development will be a top priority for DOE technology programs in the agency s fiscal year 2022 budget and rebutted suggestions that the administration was not sufficiently prioritizing cybersecurity in the wake of multiple high-profile intrusions.
I know from our industry partners that I have spoken to that they are totally focused on it and I am completely committed to getting them, and us the tools and the intelligence and the cyber response that they need to address the threats that are out there, Granholm said during a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing. ....
