'COVID is a workplace hazard': Unions ask Alta. government for safer work environments

Alberta unions are calling on the province to recognize the danger of COVID-19 in workplaces.
According to the Workers Compensation Board, nearly 8,900 Albertans have made COVID-19-related claims between January 2020 and March 2021.
On Wednesday, coinciding with the National Day of Mourning in remembrance of workers who have died as a result of on-the-job illness or injury, the Alberta Federation of Labour called on the United Conservative government to prioritize vaccines for essential employees, set up vaccination clinics in workplaces, and bring in paid sick leave. By AFL s estimate, about two-third of working Albertans don t have access to the latter. ....

Canada’s governments prioritize profits over lives, keep schools and workplaces open as third COVID-19 wave surges
COVID-19 infection rates are once again rising dramatically across Canada driven by new, more contagious and lethal variants. Yet all levels of government are prioritizing corporate profits over human lives and adamantly refusing to take the urgent public health measures needed to prevent a catastrophic third wave of the pandemic and mass death.
Last Thursday, Ontario Conservative Premier Doug Ford ordered a totally ineffectual 28-day “shutdown” that has been denounced by health experts and even sections of the corporate media as too little, too late. Similar “shutdowns” were announced last week in British Columbia, Quebec and in the Atlantic provinces, while doctors in Alberta have unsuccessfully implored Premier Jason Kenney and his United Conservative Party government to apply an “emergency brake” to its reckless re-opening policies. ....

Frontline workers at some Alberta non-profits will get the $1,200 benefit for serving in critical roles throughout the pandemic after the government appeared to take a U-turn Thursday.
When the Critical Worker Benefit application portal opened Wednesday evening, it specifically listed non-profit organizations in the private sector as ineligible. ....
