4 June 2021 Federal resources minister Keith Pitt was not advised that the Kaban Energy Hub project would feature both a wind farm and big battery before he vetoed a $270 million government loan on the basis that it was not dispatchable, department officials told a Senate Estimates hearing on Friday. Project developer Neoen approached the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) to seek a $280 million loan for the Kaban Energy Hub project that will combine both a 157MW wind farm with a 100MW big battery. The project, to be built in Northern regional Queensland, is expected to support the creation of around 250 jobs during its construction phase. ....
Labor Senator Murray Watt says the talk about vaccine incentives such as lottery tickets or beer “shows the level of desperation” the government has reached with its rollout.
“Who would have thought we would have to provide incentives in lottery tickets and things like that to people to get a vaccine that will keep them safe,” he said.
“But that’s where we’ve got to in this country that this vaccine rollout has been stuffed up so badly that we’ve now got to be inventing incentives to get people to do something that keeps them safe”. ....
Premium Content Amendments to the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility passed Federal Parliament on Thursday. The $5 billion federal loans scheme was criticised for years for being slow to hand money to approved projects. The recent amendments broaden the scope of projects eligible for funding; permit NAIF to provide loans to entities other than states and territories, and determine the terms of those loans; and allow a total of $500 million of investment in equity, capped at $50 million or 50 per cent of any particular project. As the program was due to expire at the end of this financial year, it was extended it for another five years. ....
