'Something that makes a difference'


Kelly Moses is the Marketing Coordinator for the DeKalb County Children’s Advocacy Center and Thrifty Outfitters, which are 501c3 non-profits. Moses also supervises Thrifty Outfitters. Thrifty Outfitters provides funding for both the DeKalb County CAC and The Gathering Place.
Moses is from the area and graduated from Fort Payne High School in 1986. He has personally owned several businesses and has worked in the corporate world. Moses said in his current position, he definitely feels he is in his wheelhouse because the everyday business of business is what he knows best.
“I have always prayed that I would be able to one day do something bigger than me, for something that makes a difference,” said Moses. “The CAC provides hope and healing for abused and at-risk children, I feel I have been blessed with this position as Marketing Coordinator.” ....

Gov. Ivey awards grants to help child abuse victims in northeast Alabama


April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded three grants totaling $36,000 to help three nonprofit organizations continue serving victims of child abuse in four northeast Alabama counties.
Grants of $13,500 to the Children’s Advocacy Center of Cherokee County, $11,500 to DeKalb County Children’s Advocacy Center and $11,000 to Calhoun/Cleburne Children’s Center were awarded to help these organizations continue providing forensic exams, counseling, court advocacy and other support services to victims and non-offending family members.
“No child should ever suffer abuse, but when these crimes unfortunately occur, there is help available,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the staff members of these organizations for the important work they do in helping children and families in their road to recovery.” ....

Rainsville Council announces spring cleanup dates


The Rainsville City Council on Monday night approved rescheduling the city’s annual spring cleanup month to begin Friday, May 28 through Wednesday, June 30, 2021.
The council approved the purchase of five 20-yard dumpsters at the cost of $27,315.00 scheduled to be delivered around May 19.
As a result, Councilman Ricky Byrum suggested pushing forward their annual spring clean-up month to allow time for the new dumpsters to arrive. Following a brief discussion, the council unanimously approved the move to begin on May 28.
“We use those for our clean-up,” he said. ”We have so many out right now I am not sure that we will have enough for the clean-up.” ....

Library hosts child abuse awareness event


On Thursday, the Henagar Public Library hosted an event on Child Abuse Awareness presented by the DeKalb County Children s Advocacy Center.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and everyone can play a role in supporting families to prevent child abuse. This month is about recognizing the importance of families and communities working together to strengthen families to prevent child abuse and neglect.
During the event, Executive Director of the Children s Advocacy Center, Elizabeth Wheatley, talked about the history of child abuse, child abuse types and what all the Children Advocacy Center does.
Wheatley said most people may not think about child abuse very often, but taking the time to think about it, even just in the month of April, helps with awareness. So this is a time where we can make you think about child abuse a little bit more and what all it entails, she said. ....

The Family Services of North Alabama presents Taco Trot 7.3K virtual run, bringing together communities across vast space for a common goal, all while raising awareness.

Family Services of North Alabama is a rape crisis center serving DeKalb and Marshall Counties, empowering, advocating, teaching and providing advocacy for victims of sexual assault.
Family Services of North Alabama Executive Director Sherrie Hiett, who oversees both Marshall and DeKalb Counties, said the run was initially scheduled for April of 2020 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it did not take place. ....
