Mayor Lee Davis said theyâve been working on this project for approximately three years. âWe have a couple of people that have expressed interest in building a recreation center.â Davis said they will build the center in four different phases, starting with the basketball and volleyball courts. â[The interested parties] have already spent a bunch of money getting architects to design it, but before they actually go any further and spend a lot more money, they want to ensure that we will sell them that property,â Davis said. âIt would be a commitment from us to sell them that property.â ....
April is both Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. On Thursday, the Henagar Public Library hosted an event on sexual assault and child abuse presented by the Family Services of North Alabama. Guest speakers from Family Services included Zaira Parga, Eric Henderson, Katelynn Casewell, Jennifer Lugo, Alecia Caudill and Sherrie Hiett. Family Services of North Alabama is a family service center that strives to inspire, empower and invoke positive changes in our community through education, resource networking, advocacy and counseling. Founded in 2002, Family Services is a private, non-profit agency governed by a board of directors made up of community volunteers. ....
On Thursday, the Henagar Public Library hosted an event on Child Abuse Awareness presented by the DeKalb County Children s Advocacy Center. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and everyone can play a role in supporting families to prevent child abuse. This month is about recognizing the importance of families and communities working together to strengthen families to prevent child abuse and neglect. During the event, Executive Director of the Children s Advocacy Center, Elizabeth Wheatley, talked about the history of child abuse, child abuse types and what all the Children Advocacy Center does. Wheatley said most people may not think about child abuse very often, but taking the time to think about it, even just in the month of April, helps with awareness. So this is a time where we can make you think about child abuse a little bit more and what all it entails, she said. ....
This February will be the third annual Love your Library, month. The Henagar Public Library will accept donations and begin virtual book readings during the month of February. âWe do it in February because of Valentineâs Day and to use that time at the beginning of the year so we can continue our programs and develop new ones throughout the year that strengthen our families in the community. That is near and dear to my heart.â said Library Director Donna Carlin. Donations are used for purchasing books, reading programs throughout the year, skills classes and other activities that strengthen the community. ....
