On Wednesday, March 10, at 5 p.m. Pacific Time, Ken Farley, the W. M. Keck Foundation Professor of Geochemistry in the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences (GPS), continues the 2020–2021 Watson Lecture season with Perseverance on Mars.
As project scientist for the Mars 2020 mission, Farley led the science team and worked with engineers to design and build the Perseverance rover. After eight years of development at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which Caltech manages for NASA, Perseverance launched on July 30, 2020; just over six months later, on February 18, 2021, it successfully landed on the Red Planet. At Caltech, Farley s research focuses on the geochemistry of noble gases and its applications to a range of Earth science problems, as well as the exploration of Mars and its geochemistry, geology, and geomorphology. ....

Ken Farley, W. M. Keck Foundation professor of Geochemistry, Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences and the project scientist for the Mars 2020 mission, continues the 2020–2021 Watson Lecture season with a talk about, “Perseverance on Mars,” Wednesday, March 10, at 5:00 p.m., via Zoom.
After eight years of development at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Perseverance rover successfully landed on Mars on February 18, 2021. In this Watson Lecture, Farley will describe how this highly capable rover will investigate rocks deposited billions of years ago at the bottom of a large lake (long since disappeared), seeking evidence of possible Martian life at that time. He will also look at how the rocks carefully collected by Perseverance during these explorations will provide the cargo for the first-ever effort to bring samples back to Earth from another planet. ....

The first American woman to launch into space who was not a professional astronaut but a working scientist, Millie Hughes-Fulford, has died at the age of 75.
Hughes-Fulford s death was confirmed by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) on Thursday (Feb. 4).

I wanted to share this Boston Globe article and callout TripAdvisor for supporting our local community, Kern emailed the Patriot, citing a Feb. 3 article titled TripAdvisor opens up its headquarters in Needham to distribute vaccines.
As a former Barnstable High School graduate – it is very important that we all do our part to help one another, especially our most vulnerable residents, Kern wrote. He added that he spontaneously thought of using TripAdvisor s now-vacant HQs as a vaccine site two weeks ago over family dinner. ....
