ARS to Recover Waste Heat: New Method of Natural Gas Pre-cooling in LNG Plant

Chinese Academy of Sciences
Developing clean and low-carbon natural gas is a key point of the nation’s energy development strategy, and also an important measure to achieve “Carbon Neutral”. China’s natural gas reserves exceed 100 trillion cubic meters, while more than 70% of the reserves are unconventional dispersed sources (i.e. coal-bed methane, tight gas). By processing the unconventional dispersed natural gas sources, they are vented or burned directly which result in serious energy waste and environmental pollution.
It is of great social significance and economic benefit to develop skid-mounted Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants for the gathering and transportation of dispersed natural gas sources. Current skid-mounted LNG technology is focusing on main-cooling process, but paying less attention to the pre-cooling stage. And it is found that pre-cooling stage by adopting Compression Refrigeration System (CRS) even consumes more than 20% of the total power co ....

Beyond secretion of insulin, the novel function of β cell in regulating glucose homeostasis

In a new study published in
Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, Chen-Yu Zhang s group and Antonio Vidal-Puig s group at University of Cambridge report that pancreatic β cells secrete miR-29 family members (miR-29a, miR-29b and miR-29c) in response to high levels of free fatty acids (FFAs). These β cell-derived miR-29s are delivered to the liver, promoting insulin resistance and enhancing hepatic glucose output.
Over 100 years after insulin was discovered, it was believed that pancreatic β cells only secreted a single hormone insulin. Pancreatic β cell-derived insulin regulates glucose homeostasis by binding with the insulin receptors located in the liver, skeletal muscle, adipose tissues and other peripheral organs. The discovery of insulin and its receptor was essential to understand the mechanisms controlling glucose homeostasis and the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes defined by defective insulin secretion, signal transduction and insulin resistance. However, gluco ....

Pancreatic β cell-derived exosomal miR-29 family enhances hepatic glucose output

In a new study published in
Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, Chen-Yu Zhang s group at Nanjing University, School of Life Sciences, and Antonio Vidal-Puig s group at University of Cambridge report that pancreatic β cells secrete miR-29 family members (miR-29s) via exosomes in response to high levels of free fatty acids (FFAs). Theses β cell-derived exosomal miR-29s regulate glucose homeostasis through their manipulations on glucose output in liver.
Previously, Chen-Yu Zhang s group identified extracellular miRNA as a new form of cell-to-cell communication. They are among the first that reported the selective secretion of miRNAs under different physiological or pathological states; also, the uptake and function of secreted miRNAs in recipient cells. In the past decade, intensive studies have revealed the role of extracellular miRNAs in a range of biological processes. Thus, as a newly-emerged secretory factor, more insightful studies are needed to further reveal its re ....

Transmission heterogeneities, kinetics, and controllability of SARS-CoV-2

Time and intimacy drive transmission
A minority of people infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmit most infections. How does this happen? Sun
et al. reconstructed transmission in Hunan, China, up to April 2020. Such detailed data can be used to separate out the relative contribution of transmission control measures aimed at isolating individuals relative to population-level distancing measures. The authors found that most of the secondary transmissions could be traced back to a minority of infected individuals, and well over half of transmission occurred in the presymptomatic phase. Furthermore, the duration of exposure to an infected person combined with closeness and number of household contacts constituted the greatest risks for transmission, particularly when lockdown conditions prevailed. These findings could help in the design of infection control policies that have the potential to minimize both virus transmission and econ ....
