Greece's health authorities on alert as Covid-19 mutation cases rise to 59

Alarm sounded in health services as the number of mutated Covid-19 strains in Greece increased so far to 59. President of National Health Organization (EODY), Panagiotis Arkoumaneas, said on Tuesday the “British variant is the only one that has been identified in the country.”
He added “We must assume that there is a dispersion of the new mutation in our country as well.”
Mutations of the virus were initially detected in Attica and Crete. However, there are now strong indications that three more mutation cases have been detected also in Northern Greece
“At present, only the British mutation has been identified in the country with a total of 59 cases, while there are also some “suspected” cases in Northern Greece,” Akroumaneas said speaking to Skai TV. ....

Greek health experts at the committee of the Health Ministry gave the green light for the administration of colchicine, a well-known and cheap cardiological drug, to be included in the protocol of oral treatment in patients with Covid – 19. The approval was reportedly given following the results of a big Canadian study in which also Greece participated.
The Canadian study COLCORONA showed that the administration of colchicine to covid-19 patients “reduced mortality by 44%, hospitalization by 25% hospitalization and the need for mechanical ventilation by 50%” Cardiology Professor and National Coordinator for the Greek part of the study Spyros Defteraios said ....

The pandemic could be contained if half of Greece's population gets vaccinated, expert says

A current two-month lockdown for Greece officially ended on Thursday, but government officials say many restrictions will be extended to allow for a successful rollout of the coronavirus vaccine. While lockdown ends, Greece’s new cases spiked to over 800 overnight, yesterday.
In an interview with the Athens Macedonian News Agency (ANA) released on Saturday, health expert Gkikas Magiorkinis said that “if 40-50 per cent of the population has been vaccinated by summer then the pandemic will be significantly contained”.
Dr Magiorkinis, is an assistant professor at the Department of Hygiene & Epidemiology of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens as well as a member of the committee of experts of the Ministry of Health. ....

Greece's Health Ministry blames doctors for Covid-deaths outside ICUs

Deputy Health Ministry Vassilis Kontozamanis blamed the doctors for the deaths of Covid-19 patients outside ICUs and not the shortage of beds in the country’s Intensive Care Units. The Deputy Minister did not give any data about the death rates in and outside ICUs, neither did he commit himself to do so in the future.
Responding to a question of a medical news website
iatronet.gr, regarding the news that “80% of Covid-patients’ deaths occured outside ICUs,” Kontozamanis said:
“All patients had access to the ICU and that the criterion for their admission was not the adequacy or not of the beds, but the comorbidity and the choices made by the hospital doctors.” ....
