The Lucknow police is reportedly setting up AI-enabled cameras to record pictures of women ‘who look distressed’. The additional director-general explained that “The cameras will be able to detect any change in the facial expressions of a woman being subjected to stalking, threats or harassment on the streets, and an alert will be sent to the police control room.” He further clarified that around 200 hotspots for crimes against women have been identified by the Lucknow police on the basis of areas frequented by women as well as from spots that generated the most complaints. This initiative, which was launched under the Uttar Pradesh government’s ‘Mission Shakti’ programme, has met with a backlash from civil society organizations and lawyers. ....

Synopsis
The government defended the need for the CMS, NETRA and NATGRID surveillance systems saying that grave threats to the country from terrorism, radicalisation, cybercrime, drug cartels, etc, cannot be understated or ignored and it was imperative, therefore, to have a robust mechanism for speedy collection of actionable intelligence .
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the NGOs, told the court that the affidavit does not state what specific steps have been taken by the government and added that since all kind of personal information, like travel itinerary, purchases, bank transactions, etc, was being intercepted and not just phone calls ....

New Delhi, Feb 5 : The Centre on Friday told the Delhi High Court that checks and balance had been put in place for electronic surveillance by government agencies, which was only through lawful interceptions and monitoring.
The court was hearing a petition filed through advocate Prashant Bhushan that claimed that the citizens right to privacy was endangered by surveillance systems like the Centralised Monitoring System, Network Traffic Analysis, and National Intelligence Grid. ....
