The COVID outbreak at LaSalle, and smaller outbreaks at the IDVA’s homes in Manteno and Quincy, present a challenge to Pritzker. In 2018, he waged a campaign against former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner partially on the message that the venture capitalist-turned-politician failed in his handling of the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at the Quincy facility in 2015, which killed 13 residents and sickened many more.
Within days of being sworn in, Pritzker requested a “complete review of the health, safety, and security process,” at the state’s four veterans’ homes via executive order. The resulting external audit made nearly two-dozen suggestions for improving health and safety at the facilities. But according to Friday’s report, many recommended fixes, including updating and standardizing infection control policies across the four homes, were never made. ....

The Coronavirus outbreak at the state-run LaSalle Veterans’ Home claimed a 36th life earlier this week, though the spread within the home has been in control for weeks after infecting 90% of residents and killing more than a quarter of the facility’s population.
But during the deadliest days of the outbreak in November, some residents were not able to get access to donated toiletries due to an antiquated policy that’s been changed in recent weeks. The old policy meant that residents at the facility would have to wait up to a week for access to donated supplies of name-brand shampoo, toothpaste or other person ....

On Friday, well-known nursing home personal injury law firm Levin & Perconti announced it was launching investigations on behalf of four families of dead veterans, a precursor to filing suit against the state.
Michael Bonamarte, an attorney handling the cases, said it was indefensible for the outbreak at LaSalle to have become so widespread and deadly eight months into the pandemic, especially after healthcare professionals both in Illinois and around the world learned from nursing home outbreaks in the spring.
“At this point in the game, with all the knowledge we have, in my opinion, it’s inexcusable to see an outbreak of this nature,” Bonamarte told NPR Illinois. “It’s mind-boggling to me how something like that can happen at this stage in the pandemic.” ....
