Iowan Mia Peterson, champion for people with disabilities, dies at 47


Retired U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin praised her persistence.  
“She had a great life and did a lot of important things,” he said in an interview. “She helped move the needle toward more independence for young people with disabilities.”
Harkin, an Iowa Democrat who led the 1990 passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act, said Peterson helped others understand that Down syndrome has a spectrum of effects. Some people experience profound disabilities from the genetic condition, but others do not. 
“You can’t just say, ‘Well, this person has Down syndrome, so they have to sit in a pigeonhole. No,” Harkin said. ....

When Tom and Rita O Neill s son Josh was born 42 years ago with Down syndrome, he was immediately diagnosed in critical condition and required two surgeries over the next 37 days. His life depended upon his oxygen machine.
“You watch this infant striving to live, and I remember thinking this guy is really tough because he wasn t supposed to live,” Tom O Neill said. “He s a strong soul.” ....

Noel Paul Stookey is still singing for a good cause
The Blue Hill resident gained famed with Peter, Paul and Mary in the 1960s and recently put out an album to raise money for several causes.

Noel Paul Stookey first gained fame as a singer and activist with Peter, Paul and Mary nearly 60 years ago. As part of that folk trio, he sang to more than 200,000 people during the 1963 civil rights march on Washington, D.C., where Martin Luther King Jr. also delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.
