MUMBAI: Bombay high court on Thursday directed state prison authorities to give a report by May 17 on the health of Sudha Bharadwaj, accused to be an alleged Maoist in the January 2018 Elgaar Parishad case.
Bhardwaj’s daughter Maaysha Singh filed the petition for her mother’s interim bail for six months or till such time as the Covid spread is contained in Mumbai. Her counsel Yug Chaudhary argued that Bharadwaj, 60, is lodged at Byculla women’s prison. She has several co-morbidities and that makes her extremely vulnerable and requires urgent medical attention.
Her petition said Bharadwaj, an activist and former law professor at National Law University Delhi who founded an organisation called Janhit in Chhatisgarh to provide legal aid to the marginalised, has ailments including diabetes, ischemic heart disease and being in the “over-crowded” women’s prison with 50-60 inmates in her ward who share three bathrooms puts her at a “fatal risk” ....

The second major problem facing the justice system is the number of pending cases. Exactly how many cases are pending in the courts across the country? Perhaps the most reliable figures (but not necessarily 100% accurate) are in the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) which is an interactive page on the ecourts website – even though this plays truant sometimes.
